Year 2General InformationWe would like to welcome you to Year Two at Discovery College. Our three classes are taught by Mrs Amy Barry (2ABY), Ms Michelle Chan (2MCN) and Mrs Kristy Baron (2KBN). We are also very lucky to have three Educational Assistants working along side us. Our EA's are working in our classes full time to assist each of the teachers as well as all of our students. Our Year Two EA's are Mrs Tilly Johnston (2ABY), Mrs Eleanor Brooks (2MCN) and Ms Abbie Tsang (2KBN). The Year Two web page will be updated on a fortnightly basis, so please see our 'news/updates' tab each fortnight to see an update on what has been happening in our classes. If you would like to contact any of the teachers you may choose to email us at: We are looking forward to having a great year with you and your children. Regards, News & UpdatesSeptember 6, 2010 (updated September 7, 2010 11.25am)What a fabulous and very busy start to our year! All of our students have settled into their new classes well and have started to make new friends as well as reacquaint themselves with old ones. It has been wonderful to see how quickly our students have learned the new classroom routines and to see that they are becoming more independent. Unit of inquiry: Central idea: Relationships are enhanced by learning about other peoples' perspectives and communicating your own. Lines of inquiry:
Throughout this unit our students have been having many discussions about texts that we have been reading that involved friendship, conflict and resolution. Next week students will be using the text 'Town Mouse and Country Mouse' to highlight the idea that other people may have different perspectives to the ones that we value. Students will be involved in role-play to reinforce this idea. We will also be discussing this weeks completed homework in class to give us many examples for the reasons behind conflicts. We will use these situations as examples in role-play to allow the students to suggest a range of strategies that they can use if ever they are in similar situations. Maths: During the first few weeks of the term our classes have been focusing on 'pattern'. We have been creating, copying, continuing, labeling and describing many colour, shape, noise and action patterns. Students have used cameras to take photographs of many patterns that they have found around the school. In the coming weeks students will be making increasingly complex patterns and we will be identifying patterns within number. This is leading to skills and strategies such as skip counting and counting on. Students will continue to use manipulatives, number lines and hundreds charts as tools to help them solve problems and continue patterns. Please see below to find the targets that we will continue to focus on throughout this unit.
Language: Currently we are focusing on developing students' understanding and skills in regards to writing recounts. Students have been sequencing events and learning about the importance of 'signal words' that indicate a change of time, such as; first, next, later, finally, meanwhile. Please see below to find the targets that we will continue to focus on throughout this unit.
Swimming: We would like to congratulate all of our students for doing so well in their first week of swimming. They have been very responsible in their actions and the way they walk to, from and around the pool so safely. Our students are demonstrating their independence by getting themselves dressed and undressed. But best of all, so far we have had no lost or missing items of clothing. A reminder though, please make sure EVERYTHING is labeled, including swimmers, swim caps and goggles. We would also like to thank all of the parent volunteers who have been helping out this week. You have helped to make all of the clothing changes run very smoothly. LEAP: Over the next two weeks all of our students will be attending the Life Education van. I am sure that they will be able to tell you about this after their visit. If you would like more information about 'LEAP', please visit their website: www.leap.com.hk School photos: 2.1 (2ABY) - Monday 6th September Sibling photos - Wednesday 15th September 7:30-8:30 and Friday 17th September 7:30-9.00 Please refer to 2010-11 Class Photo Schedules for complete schedule. English Language OverviewMaths OverviewParent information bookletsThese targets show some of the things your child should be able to do by the end of a particular year level. These expectations are from the English National Curriculum, which is the basis of the ESF Scope and Sequence document, which along with the IB Scope and Sequence informs the curriculum for primary at Discovery College. Some targets are harder than they seem and not all children will be proficient on all of them by the end of a given year. Therefore classroom programmes are flexible and aim to meet the needs of groups of students working at the different levels of the curriculum.
