Service is found at the core of the Diploma Programme, within the Creativity, Action and Service programme, or CAS. CAS is a framework for experiential learning, designed to involve students in new roles. Details about DP CAS will be added as we develop the programme during the year in readiness for it to commence in August 2012.
MYP CAS
Within the MYP, Service exists within the Community and Service (C&S) Area of Interaction. An essential component of the MYP, C&S will be a part of all students' MYP experience in every year of the programme. C&S has two key elements, which are related to the learning experiences in the curriculum and the action that students engage in.
Our teachers use the C&S framework to raise awareness of the different types of communities, the issues that communities face, and the roles that we all play in our communities. C&S also has a service component, which is designed to encourage empathy and respect for the needs of others. We believe that this also brings individual benefits to students, which include:
A avenue for taking action on issues learnt about in class
Increased awareness of the needs of different communities
Sharing and developing of one's skills, talents and resources
Developing leadership and team-orientated skills
Gaining an insight into different social patterns and ways of life
Consideration of the ethical implications of action and inaction in their communitites
In addition to C&S being an integral part of the curriculum, it is also found within the MYP CAS Programme. Creativity, Action and Service, or CAS, is a framework for experiential learning, designed to involve students in new roles. It provides students an opportunity to take what they have learnt about C&S related issues in the classroom and then plan and then do REAL tasks that have REAL consequences, and then REFLECTING on these experiences over time. The purpose is for students to be involved in activities that will make a SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE to their lives and to the lives of others, as well as CHALLENGE students to participate in activities that they would not normally do.
Once a students completes the requirements of the MYP CAS Programme, then they may be able to receive their MYP certificate.
Below is a continually updated list of organisations and activity providers related to Action (PYP) and CAS (MYP & DP) in the Hong Kong region.
