MYP Yr 1 | Mandarin A | Course Overview

This course is designed for those students who have a strong background in the language either as native speakers or with considerable formal schooling with Mandarin as the medium of instruction. Students will be exposed to the literary traditions of Chinese-speaking communities and will be expected to demonstrate a capacity to write creatively and critically, respond effectively to literature, coherently structure and support their work, and use language effectively to support their work.

MYP Yr 1 | Mandarin B (Standard) | Course Overview

In this course students will develop their reading, listening, writing and speaking skills in Mandarin by understanding, recognising and responding appropriately to requests for simple information. Activities used to build student knowledge and understanding include practising writing Chinese characters with correct stroke order, writing simple sentences and short paragraphs, learning to read and listen to Mandarin texts for general and specific meanings, delivering monologues and participating in scripted and unscripted conversations.

Note that there are 4 classes within the Standard course, with placement being determined by the student’s proficiency in the language.

MYP Yr 1 | Mandarin B (Advanced) | Course Overview


In this course students will develop their reading, listening, writing and speaking skills in Mandarin with the aim of recognising and understanding details in both simple factual and expressive language, writing sustained passages with confidence and fluency; and understanding and responding to complex written and spoken texts. Activities used to build students’ knowledge and understanding include writing for different purposes, learning to read and listen to Mandarin texts for general and specific meanings, as well as learning to draw conclusions. Students will also develop their listening and speaking skills through role-plays, pair work dialogues and participating in unscripted conversations.
