MYP Yr 2 | English A and Humanities | Course OverviewThe Year 8 English A and Humanities programme is designed to build upon students’ critical literacy skills so they can meaningfully engage with local and global issues. Through inquiries into travel writing; Hong Kong’s history, geography, culture and economy; the use of persuasive language in advertising; the experience of growing up and the impact of globalisation upon individuals and communities, students will be exposed to a broad range of literary and non-literary texts to develop their knowledge of genres. With each genre, students will explore the conventions, purpose and intended audiences of each as a means of informing their ability to analyse text and also to create their own texts. Increasingly independent research is supported through the teaching of information literacy skills around finding and selecting information and making meaning of this information. At this stage, great emphasis is placed on academic integrity through correct use of referencing and note-taking to ensure that students are learning to become more independent thinkers able to evaluate the various strengths of sources that they use. Assessments will take various forms from written and oral responses through to multi-media presentations and internet-based web logs so as to encourage students to build their confidence with a range of communication modes. Weekly current events and literature programmes are also offered to further develop awareness and sensitivity to a broad range of social, economic and political issues.
