MYP Yr 3 | English A and Humanities | Course OverviewAt Year 9 students will explore a range of increasingly complex local and global issues including the experience of young people around the world, religions and faith systems, a study of children’s Holocaust literature and an independent inquiry into the happiness of communities within Hong Kong. Throughout the year Geography, History, Economics and Religious Studies skills are built into a programme that aims to strengthen students’ critical literacy, communication and thinking skills. Building on their growing knowledge of genres, a range of literary and non-literary texts will be covered by studying the conventions of each genre, its purpose and intended audiences. This will enable students to engage more critically with texts and evaluate their relative use and value. Writing is also approached from the perspective of genre, enabling students to understand the power of language to position readers and evoke particular responses. They will use a range of written formats to communicate their understanding and, increasingly, express independently formed points of view. At Year 9 students will take more ownership of the weekly current events programme by collecting and selecting issues of their choice and presenting them to their classmates. In keeping with the overall structure of the MYP programme, students will engage in more self-directed research with greater teacher emphasis on skills rather than content to encourage students to act upon their natural curiosity and become active inquirers. As our students mature, their understanding of community and their action through service are encouraged in English A and Humanities. Current Unit Useful website Image Gallery
